"Truth & Lies: Race, Media and Politics"

10:00am: The Power of Popular Culture.  From music to movies, television series, blogs, and books, how have people of color leveraged popular culture and social media to create content centered around their interests and needs?  What role do these platforms play in advancing racial justice?

Panelists: Damon Young & Panama Jackson of VerySmartBrothas.com, Nancy Yuen, Brian Foster, and Catherine Knight Steele

12:15pm: Intersectionality and Critical Race Theory. A Dialogue. Pioneers in the field discuss intersectionality, critical race theory, and black digital scholarship.  (In conjunction with the African American History, Culture, and Digital Humanities Initiative)

Panelists: Bonnie Thornton Dill and Patricial Hill Collins

2pm: The Politics of Racial Representation.  Who do we see, what perspectives do we hear, and why does that matter? Whether it's sports team, mascots, victims of police violence, news anchors, or politicians, who's represented and how they're portrayed have far-reaching implications.

Panelists: Kevin Blackistone, Carmen Lugo-Lugo, Matthew Hughey, and Janelle Wong

4:30pm: Reception. Keynote Address by Kevin Blackistone, Sports Journalist & Visiting Professor of Journalism at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism
