The Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland College Park is home to about 300 Sociology majors, and we want to encourage students to join the major.
Students who major in Sociology often want to help people and improve society. Our program provides students with the opportunity to meet these goals, and also to build a solid foundation to pursue future studies and/or a fulfilling career by offering:
- Individual guidance from your personal academic advisor.
- Opportunities to interact with our highly renowned faculty both inside and outside of the classroom.
- Hands-on experience through a required internship or faculty-directed undergraduate research.
To ensure that Sociology students have the competitive advantage, the SOCY undergraduate curriculum places tremendous value on our integration of core training in sociological theory, methods, and statistics. Students will also be provided with ample opportunities to develop their problem solving and non-cognitive skills.
Our students will be prepared for careers in a wide variety of fields, including: health and social services, federal, state, or local government, law enforcement, criminal justice administration, and many others.
If you are interested in learning more about the major, then please join us on Wednesday, November 16th from 12:00-1:00 pm the Sociology Undergraduate Office in room 1101 Parren J. Mitchell Art/Soc Bldg.
