This presentation aims to encourage MPRC affiliates to adopt text mining as a research method. It uses the recognition of Black and White individuals in U.S. press coverage since 1980 as a case study to demonstrate both the potential and challenges of text mining. The findings indicate that media recognition of these groups increased, particularly during periods of racialized violence (e.g., Rodney King in L.A. and George Floyd in Minneapolis) and subsequent anti-racist movements, once text ambiguities were minimized.
