This presentation examines the link between elementary school suspensions and later involvement in the juvenile justice system among Maryland public school students. Using data from the Maryland Longitudinal System Center, the study analyzes how suspensions—considering factors like reasons and timing—impact the likelihood of arrest between ages 12 and 18. By controlling for other school absences, the research aims to provide insights into the school-to-prison pipeline and the broader consequences of exclusionary discipline beyond lost learning time.
