This presentation examines the impact of Colombia's "Free Housing" program on children's education. The program provided free housing in desirable areas, and its effects were evaluated using housing lotteries and linking applicants to their children's outcomes. The study found that receiving public housing led to a 7-percentage-point increase in high school graduation (a 17% increase compared to the control group), along with higher exit exam scores and increased college attendance. The researchers identified key mechanisms behind these improvements: lottery winners attended better schools, their families experienced greater wealth, and they moved to safer, higher-income neighborhoods.
