This presentation discusses the rise in youth emergency department visits related to mental health issues and suicidal behaviors over the past 15 years. It explores how changes in diagnostic criteria and incentives for both patients and providers may have contributed to the increase in diagnoses like suicidal ideation. The paper suggests that the rise in these diagnoses may be more about shifts in how mental health conditions are identified and documented, rather than a true increase in underlying mental health problems.
