"At the Crossroads of Protest and Participation: Three Decades of Environmental Justice Activism"

In this presentation, Dr. Perkins will present an overview of her book project, At the Crossroads of Protest and Participation: Three Decades of Environmental Justice Activism.  The book tells the story of the changing environmental justice movement in California over the course of three decades of struggle. It begins in the early 1980s and shows how activists have moved away from disruptive "outsider" political tactics to "insider" political tactics. It examines new challenges facing contemporary activists as they navigate the changing political terrain.  It also juxtaposes the environmental justice movement's long history in California with its more commonly attributed origins in the South. At the Crossroads of Protest and Participation will be the first publication to analyze environmental justice activism in California as a whole, and the first book to systematically document how environmental justice activism has changed over time.
