Lester Andrist received his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Maryland in 2016 and completed postdoctoral training at New York University in 2018. Dr. Andrist is currently Director of the Master of Professional Studies program in Public Safety Leadership and Administration, which is jointly offered by the University of Maryland's Department of Sociology, Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, and the Francis King Carey School of Law.
Dr. Andrist's research has focused on forms of indefinite detention, including war prisons, concentration camps, and immigration detention centers. In previous research, Dr. Andrist has published on various topics pertaining to gender inequality.
He is also co-creator and editor-in-chief of The Sociological Cinema, a site conceived as a public sociology project and designed to popularize the discipline.
