Sonalde Desai and Feinian Chen have a received a three-year grant from William and Flora Hewlett Foundation for $725,000. This project will focus on developing survey-based measurement of women’s economic empowerment. Enhancing women’s economic empowerment is a core goal of Sustainable Development Goals to which the global community has made a deep commitment. In order to achieve these goals, it is important to ascertain the baseline and measure progress. Current measures of economic empowerment were developed over 20 years ago, but the global economic climate has changed tremendously in the intervening years. This project will develop measures of women’s economic empowerment that can be easily incorporated in national surveys and test their reliability and validity. These modules will be placed in public domain for use by the statistical community.
