Sonalde Desai's TedxBangalore talk analyzes the recent sweeping changes revealed by the India Human Development Survey (IHDS) panel data.
Large increases in education rates for children from all backgrounds decreases in poverty and increases in material possessions are some examples that underline the transformations in Indian society. And yet there remain indications that all are not progressing equally. Dr. Desai's incisive talk demonstrates that Indias's recent propserity has changed the nature of poverty from a stagnant "accident of birth" that will last throughout an individual's life, to an "accident of life" whereby household's become poor through circumstances that stretch family resources. The talk concludes with a stirring call for action to change outdated support systems that cannot provide a social safety net for the most vulnerable populations.
