SOCY386: Experiential Learning provides students the opportunity to earn course credit for doing an internship. In fall 2025, Sociology Major Selina Chan worked as an Essential Support Intern at A Wider Circle (AWC). We asked Selina to share her experiences with her internship.
Can you tell us about AWC and the work it does, and what sorts of activities you did as an intern?
AWC works to fight poverty and advance equity in the Washington D.C. area by connecting community members with the support and services they need. As an intern, I supported individuals and families from diverse backgrounds as they selected furniture, baby supplies, or professional clothing at the center.
My responsibilities included conducting confidential intake sessions, guiding clients through their appointments, and managing a high volume of phone calls.
I began my internship in September at AWC’s Silver Spring center, working on-site twice a week. During my first month, I completed training by observing staff as they performed routine tasks. I also shadowed appointments to understand how to guide and support clients through the process.
What did you find most valuable about your time with AWC?
It was rewarding to know that my work helped people settle into their homes more comfortably. My responsibilities not only supported the Essential Support Team, but also allowed me to directly impact the lives of individuals and families seeking assistance.
During the internship, I navigated challenging situations with clients, which strengthened my problem-solving skills and taught me how to create a comfortable space where clients feel heard. I also learned how to work in a high-stress environment, and developed stronger multitasking and communication skills.
