Sidra Montgomery

Doctoral Candidate

I am a doctoral candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland. My research interests include military sociology, veterans, wounded post-9/11 veterans (commonly known as "wounded warriors"), identity, and the media. My master's level-work focused on military families and military spouses, specifically examining the attachment of military spouses to the military spouse role and identity. My dissertation focuses on the significance of the "wounded warrior" construct in the lives of wounded post-9/11 veterans--examining how this new social category is constructed in the news media and how it impacts the everyday lived experiences and identity of wounded Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. Additionally, I am working with Dr. Meredith Kleykamp on research that examines the experiences of service members who transitioning out of the military and into the civilian labor force. I currently serve on the advisory board for the Military Family Advisory Network (MFAN).
