'09 PhD alum Anthony Hatch was recently selected by the Eastern Sociological Society (ESS) to serve as its Robin M. Williams, Jr. Lecturer for 2022-2023. At the 2022 ESS Annual Meeting, Hatch will deliver a lecture titled The Data Will Not Save Us: Afropessimism in the COVID-19 Archives. Hatch explains that his talk "will explore the Trump Administration's problematic use of racial heath disparities data in their failed response to the pandemic. Beyond the pandemic, I also want to question what the massive archive of racial health disparities data has really brought us in the struggle to abolish health inequalities."

As part of the lectureship, Hatch will also be invited to speak at two campuses in the 2022-2023 cycle. Past recipients of this honor include the Department of Sociology's Distinguished University Professor Emeritus George Ritzer, as well as the current Dean of the College of Arts & Humanities, Bonnie Thornton Dill.
